Born in 1990 in Munich, baritone Matthias Winckhler took his first singing lessons from Hartmut Elbert at the Bavarian Vocal Academy. From 2010 to 2015 he studied voice in the classes of Andreas Macco (vocal training) and Wolfgang Holzmair (Lied and oratorio interpretation) at the Salzburg Mozarteum University of the Arts. He also actively participated in masterclasses imparted by Matthias Goerne, Markus Hinterhäuser, Graham Johnson, Christa Ludwig, Malcolm Martineau, Bejun Mehta, Michele Pertusi, Rudolf Piernay, Peter Schreier und Breda Zakotnik. He was a bursary of the Walter and Charlotte Hamel Foundation as well as the Walter Kaminsky-Stiftung and received support for his studies through the cultural office of Fürstenfeldbruck, his home town. In 2014 he was a selected as a scholarship holder for a Lied residency at Aix-en-Provence Festival, then in 2015 in the Salzburg Festival Young Singers Project.
In 2014, at the Salzburg International Mozart Competition, he won first Prize, as well as the Mozarteum Foundation Special Prize. He had also won the Second Advancement Prize at the National Junior Voice Competition in Berlin in 2010. Matthias Winckhler was one of the Bach Prize recipients at the 18th International Bach Competition in Leipzig in 2012; in Dortmund, in 2013, he was awarded the German Schubert Society Special Prize at the Schubert-Lied Competition for voice and piano.
Since 2015/16 season he is engaged as a member of the Niedersächsische Staatsoper Hannover where he has, amongst others, covered the roles of Albert in Massenet’s Werther, Silvano in Verdi’s Un Ballo in maschera and Marullo in Rigoletto. In 2016/17, he will appear as Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze de Figaro, Belcore in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, as Tom in Henzes The English Cat and as Maximilian in Bernsteins Candide.
His concert repertoire ranges from the passions, cantatas and oratorios of J. S. Bach and other Baroque composers, a number of Classical and Romantic oratorios, all the way to contemporary music and works by living composers. Matthias Winckhler has collaborated with conductors of the likes of Karl-Friedrich Beringer, Fabio Bonizzoni, Reinhard Goebel, Hans Graf, Matthew Halls, Pablo Heras-Casado, Günter Jena, Gianandrea Noseda, Vasily Petrenko, Helmuth Rilling, Jordi Savall, Masaaki Suzuki and Jos van Veldhoven. He has performed with outstanding ensembles such as Wiener Philharmoniker, Camerata Salzburg, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, De Nederlandse Bachvereniging, Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, Leipzig Barockorchester, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Oslo Filharmonien and the instrumental ensembles Les Cornets Noirs und La Banda. Furthermore, he has worked in close collaboration with composers such as Benedikt Burghardt, Nikolaus Brass, Friedrich Cerha, Manfred Trojahn and Gerhard Wimberger.
Lied is another one of his strengths as a performer. He makes frequent Lied appearances with Marcello Amaral, Bernadette Bartos, Tobias Krampen, Verena Metzger and Jan-Philip Schulze. At the 2014 Leipzig Bachfest, he presented a series of Lieder and odes by C. P. E. Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Then, at the Kissingen Summer Festival in 2015 and 2016 he was part of the “LiederWerkstatt” (Lied workshop).
His broad range of repertoire and styles is well-documented on CD releases by Bavarian Radio (BR) and Oehms Classics and on DVD’s entitled “Death and the Maiden – a Schubertiade in Late Autumn”, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni (at the Salzburg Mozarteum).

Jan Philip Schulze studied at Musikhochschule in Munich as well as at the famous Tchaikowskij Conservatoire He has been awarded prestigious scholarships and prizes at international competitions in Italy, Spain, and South-Africa.
Currently he enjoys a busy career as soloist, chamber musician, vocal accompanist and professor leading him to the most important international stages and festivals, as Salzburger Festspiele, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Edinburgh festival, Lucerne festival, Teatro alla Scala/Milano, Theatre du Chatelet/Paris, Theatre de la Monnaie/Bruxelles, Berliner Philharmonie, Wigmore hall/London, Smithsonian Institution/Washington, and many others.
Jan Philip Schulze has performed with partners as Juliane Banse, Annette Dasch, Rachel Harnisch, Dietrich Henschel, Christiane Iven, Jonas Kaufmann, Johan Reuter, Robert Dean Smith, Violeta Urmana, Ruth Ziesak and with the Munich Philharmonic as well as the Cologne Radio Symphony orchestras.
His discography covers a broad range from songs by Strauss and Berg (Violeta Urmana/Farao) to the complete piano works of Hans Werner Henze (col legno) and from early classical chamber music (with Trio Amédée on Dabringhaus) to first recordings of major contemporary piano-concertos.
